La Romana in the Dominican Republic is becoming a popular port of call for cruise lines offering itineraries in the Caribbean The city is built around the sugar industry. However it's the nearby National Park that is the main attraction. Cruisers flock in mass to this park on their port day. The fishing village Bayahibe is the center of the tours. Park National del Este / the off-shore islands:
The biggest attraction in La Romana is the National Park del Este and in particular the dream islands of Saona, Catalina and Catalinita. The country side:
The country side is typical Caribbean. The area around La Romana has huge sugarcane plantations. And the Dominican republic is the largest cigar producer in the world. The land part of the National Park del Este consists out of dry tropical forest, lime stone formations and has numerous caves and caverns. Close to La Romana you can find the River Chavon. The block busters Apocalypse Now and Rambo III are filmed here. The river meanders through a terrific gorge, surrounded by tropical jungle. You can take a cruise on a traditional river boat and visit the river side farm to experience the tropical jungle.
La Romana City:
As said, the city of La Romana is not a particular beautiful city. However if you want to do some shopping you can visit the Jumbo Supermarket, just over the bridge from the cruise port. Another attraction close to the cruise port is the largest cigar factory in the world, Tabacalera de Garcia, owned by Altadis, the largest cigar company in the world.
Golf Casa de Campo:
On the property of Casa de Campo you can find the famous "Teeth of the Dog" golf course (# 5 in the world), as two other golf courses.
Beach Breaks:
Quite popular are the beach breaks. Around Bayahibe there are a few superb All Inclusive resorts and it is possible to buy day passes and spend the day on a resort. The beaches of Bayahibe and Dominicus are beautiful and very suitable for a beach break and to have a nice meal in a local restaurant. The taxi fare to Bayahibe is offered by Taxi Casa de Campo.
